During same time period the Beaufort sea opened extremely fast, courtesy NASA EOSDIS,
June 21 (the one with less ice) 2nd to June 23, 2014.
Bottom black bar is NOAA VIS HRPT June 22, 2014 at 20:50 UTC. The second is 22:34 UTC 1 hour 44 minutes later. North of Alaska coast separating from its ice at staggering speed. There is a lot of melting combined with winds and current doing this. Last year the same retreat occurred 3 weeks later and was much smaller and slower.
